ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE DIPLOMA
Program Description
This program is approved by the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of Ministry of advanced Education Skills & Training. As such, PTIB did not review this program.
This English as a Second Language (ESL) program is designed for students whose first language is not English with a TOEFL score below IBT61, a IELTS score below 5. or equivalents.
The courses emphasize listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar and culture. Specific instructions and practices are based on the language level of individual ESL students.

Program Duration
The duration of the program is 6 months.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program, students will:
A. Receive, interpret, and respond correctly and accurately to basic verbal messages in classroom settings.
B. Speak fluently with an understandable accent when communicating with English language.
C. Learn basic vocabulary and read in analytical way.
D. Write essays to express ideas explicitly and correctly.
E. Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour and knowledge of cross-cultural differences in working with other people in class..
F. Apply English in study and daily life problem solving.
G. Reach a TOEFL score of at least IBT61 and be ready for academic study.

Learning Resources
Learning resources are from textbook, community study, internet information compliment, and audio/videos. For details, please refer to individual syllabus for each class as attached.
Marking Scheme
There will be HW assignments, quizzes, reports, presentations, and two major exams for each class. Class Attendance, Participation, HW Assignments, Quizzes, Reports, Presentations will be at 10% each, and two major exams will be at 20% each.
Grading scale for each class is as follows:

B+ | 86-89% |
B | 83-85% |
B- | 80-82% |
C+ | 75-79% |
C | 70-74% |
D | 60-69% |
F | 0-59% |
Requirements for Graduation
1. Courses with grades lower than "C" are not counted toward the completion of ESL program at UPC.
2. An official TOEFL score of IBT61 or above.
3. Upon successful completion of 10 courses, English as Second Language Diploma will be granted by UPC.
