General Studies

Program Description

General Studies Diploma (GSD) program is designed to provide students with the education and job skills necessary to enter the workforce.

This program offers general curriculum and fundamental business knowledge. Upon successful completion of this program, students will be awarded a Diploma in General Studies.

Program Duration

The duration of the program is 24 months.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will:

  1. A. Gain basic knowledge of entry-level jobs.
  2. B. Prepare to advance in academics studies.
  3. C. Demonstrate reasoning, creative thinking, problem solving, and analytical thinking skills.
  4. D. Have abilities to acquire, organize, and present information through strong verbal and written communications skills.
  5. E. Understand ethics, cultural diversity, and interpersonal skills.
  6. F. Acquaint in accounting, finance, management, marketing, and operations.

Learning Resources

Learning resources are mainly from textbooks, while some are from real-life case studies, internet information, as well as videos. For details, please refer to individual class syllabus.

Marking Scheme

Most classes have two major exams; each weighs at least 30% towards the final grade. For some classes, there are case studies, term projects, presentations, and etc. Generally, class attendance weighs 5%, assignments weighs 10%, and exams weigh 60%, presentation, participation, and term project together weigh 25%. Instructors have the discretion to make changes to the marking scheme deemed necessary. For details, please refer to individual class syllabus.

Admission Requirements

  1. 1. High School graduate or equivalent; or age 18 and over
  2. 2. Meet one of the English proficiency requirements:
    (a) A minimum score of IBT 61 in formal TOEFL, in-house TOEFL conducted by UPC, or equivalent; or
    (b) Four years of full-time education in Canada or an English-speaking country

Tuition and Fees

  1. 1. Application fee: $250
  2. 2. Official transcript: $20 per copy
  3. 3. School documents: $10 per copy
  4. 4. Textbook: Optional (students may purchase their own copies)
  5. 5. Tuition: $9,990 per year of 10 courses ($333 per credit hour) to a total of $19,980 per program of 20 courses

Requirements for Graduation

  1. 1. Courses with grades lower than "C" are not counted towards the completion of GSD program at UPC.
  2. 2. Upon successful completion of 20 courses, General Studies Diploma will be granted by UPC.
